Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a sports club house on Mayfield Road in Thornton Heath yesterday night.
A shipping container was completely destroyed by the blaze. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus found several gas cylinders inside the container, and cooled them down as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.
The Brigade was called at 2139 and the fire was under control by 0027. Fire crews from Norbury, Croydon, Mitcham and Woodside fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Brigade’s officers and the police
