999 control officers gave vital fire survival advice to a man trapped by smoke at a fire in a block of flats on Lordship Lane in Tottenham yesterday night.

The fire was discovered by the occupant of a second floor flat, who called the Brigade then returned to his flat. 999 control officers gave him vital fire survival advice, until he was rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus via internal staircase. He was suffering from smoke inhalation and treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

Two fire engines and 10 firefighters attended the scene. The fire damaged part of the communal stairwell between the ground and first floor.

London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“By listening to the advice of our skilled 999 control officers the resident was able to stay away from the smoke and safely wait for firefighters to arrive.”

Two more people left the flat on the first floor before the arrival of the Brigade.

The Brigade was called at 2252 and the fire was under control by 2332. Fire crews from Tottenham and Edmonton fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by London Fire Brigade officers and the police.
