Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers tackled a fire in a ground floor flat on Canterbury Crescent in Brixton.

The ground floor flat was badly damaged by the blaze. The fire has also damaged a flat on the first and second floors of the 16 storey block.

Around 50 people were evacuated from the block. A man, a pregnant woman and girl were suffering with smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around and the Brigade’s 999 control took 36 emergency calls. The Brigade believes that the fire started in a shed in a ground floor garden and spread to the block of flats.

The Brigade was called at 1319 and the fire was under control by 1444. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
