Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a block of flats on Wellington Way in Mile End this afternoon.
The fire gutted a three roomed flat on the eighth floor of the 22 storey block. Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the eighth floor lobby and he was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service for burns and smoke inhalation
During its early stages smoke from the fire was very visible and the Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 15 emergency calls to the incident.
The Brigade was called at 1204 and the fire was under control by 1259. Crews from Homerton, Poplar, Stratford, Whitechapel and Millwall fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
