Firefighters evacuated around 200 people following a large gas leak caused by a ruptured gas main at a building site on Queens Drive, Hackney this afternoon. The people were evacuated from a block of flats next to the site.

Fire crews assisted the gas board, who isolated the gas supply and made the area safe, before allowing residents back into their homes.

Two fire engines, from Holloway and Islington fire stations, and some specialist appliances attended the scene. The police also attended.

The Brigade was called at 1530 and left the incident in the care of the police and National Grid at around 1800.
