A hundred people were evacuated following a gas leak on the Fulham Road in West Brompton.

Firefighters were initially called to a fire in the basement of a property. On arrival crews found the fire was already out but there was a strong smell of gas.

A 50 metre exclusion zone was put in place and the Fulham Road was closed in both directions between Nightingale Place and Edith Grove.

Station Manager Kevin McKenzie said:

"Around 100 people were evacuated by police and firefighters. The gas board have isolated the main and exclusion zone has been lifted."

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Wandsworth, Kensington, Hammersmith and Fulham fire stations were at the incident.

The Brigade was called at 0936 and the incident was over at 1440.
