Fire crews investigated a bag of chemical waste left near Trafalgar Square church
Firefighters investigate the a bag that has been left near Saint Martins in the Field church in Trafalgar Square. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus inspected the bag which had industrial strength chemical granules inside.
Station Manager Sam Kazmanli, who was at the scene said:
“Firefighters used detection and monitoring equipment to find out what chemicals were involved. We found that the bag contained industrial strength chemical granules inside. We doubled bag the contents and it was removed by London Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). Around 20 people were evacuated from the church as a precaution.”
The Brigade was called at 0839 and the incident was over at 0955. Fire crews from Soho and surrounding stations are attending the scene.
