An elderly woman was taken to hospital after her toaster caught fire whilst she tried to cook crumpets in The City, E1, yesterday evening.

The woman tried to put out the fire using a tea towel, but this just caused the blaze to spread.

She was helped from the second floor flat at a block on Haydon Walk, by a carer and taken to hospital suffering slight smoke inhalation.

The toaster and a worktop were damaged in the fire and a small area of the flat was also damaged by smoke.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson, said: “It is vital that you never try and tackle fires yourself, as they can cause injuries, as seen in this incident. Always get out, stay out and call 999 right away.”

Two fire engines from Dowgate and Whitechapel fire stations attended the incident.

The Brigade was called at 1802 and the fire was under control at 1819.
