Firefighters rescued a man from a fire at a block of flats on Longfellow Road in Walthamstow, this afternoon.

The man was rescued via a ladder from a rear balcony by crews wearing breathing apparatus. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service.

The fire was in the hallway of a five roomed flat on the first floor and is believed to have been started by a firework.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This incident shows how dangerous fireworks can be. If you are planning to have fireworks at home, please always follow the firework safety code."

Firefighters from Walthamstow and Stoke Newington fire stations attended the incident.

The Brigade was called at 1508 and the fire was under control at 1604.
