Firefighters rescued two people from a fire at a sheltered housing block on Redcliffe Square in West Brompton early this morning.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from a flat on the ground floor and a woman was escorted to safety from another flat within the block. They and four other people were treated by the London Ambulance Service. Twenty other people left the property before the arrival of the Brigade.

Half of a three roomed flat on the ground floor was damaged by fire.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers from Kensington, Chelsea, Fulham and Battersea fire stations and a turntable ladder from Soho attended the incident.

The Brigade was called at 0433 and the fire was brought under control at 0530. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
