Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought a fire in a former nightclub on South Street in Romford  last night.

The fire was located on the second floor of the disused building, which was slightly damaged in the blaze. Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to search the building for people but thankfully there was no one inside.

Watch Manager Rob Hyde who was at the scene said:

“We were told the building was being used by homeless people as a place to sleep but fortunately nobody was found inside. The building had been boarded up which made it quite difficult to ventilate the property.”

Around 21 firefighters and officers from Romford, Hornchurch and Ilford fire stations attended the incident.

The Brigade was called at 2216 and the fire as brought under control at 0011.
