Eight fire engines and more than 50 firefighters have been tackling a fire in a basement nightclub on Ganton Street in Soho this morning.

Crews confined the fire to the basement of the building, which has a restaurant and offices above it, and they are now ventilating the affected area.

Station Manager Nic Myatt who was at the scene said: "Crews did exceptionally well and worked incredibly hard in arduous conditions to stop this fire from spreading to other parts of the building and to contain it to what was quite a large basement area. Thankfully  no-one was inside at the time and there were no injuries."

Firefighters from Soho, Euston, Lambeth, Kensington, Paddington and Islington fire stations were at the scene.

The Brigade was called at 0455 and the fire was under control by 0834. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

We will be working with local traders to get the area open for businesses as soon as possible.
