Firefighters are encouraging boat owners to ensure their vessels are fitted with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms after a barge fire on Regent's Canal.
Part of a 15m Dutch barge was destroyed by the fire. One woman left the boat before the Brigade arrived and fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries.
Watch Manager Matt Gregory, who was at the scene, said: "The fire started in the kitchen area of the boat and fortunately the occupant smelt the smoke and left.
"There were no smoke alarms on board.
"Boat users need to be aware of the real and serious risks of fire and carbon monoxide.
"Due to the small spaces and fumes from engines or generators, the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is higher.
"Boat owners should make sure they use cooking equipment such as gas stoves correctly and safely and never barbecue indoors.
"Having both a carbon monoxide alarm and working smoke alarms will give the earliest possible warning if there are dangerous levels of carbon monoxide or if a fire breaks out."
The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
The Brigade was called at 0254 and the fire was under control at 0540. Three fire engines and two fire rescue units from Kentish Town, Euston, Soho, Bethnal Green and Battersea fire stations were at the scene.
