A shop was saved by sprinklers after an electrical fault caused a fire at the Bentall Centre in Kingston.

The shop was fitted with a sprinkler system and one sprinkler head operated and helped control the fire until firefighters arrived at the scene. Only a small part of the shop was damaged by fire.

Security guards at the shopping centre raised the alarm when they heard a smoke detector sounding in one of the shops.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This fire highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies and business owners to install them.

“It is a common misconception that in the event of a fire all sprinklers go off. In this case, only one sprinkler activated to control the fire spread and limit fire damage."

The Brigade was called at 2311 and the fire was under control at 0134. Three fire engines and 14 firefighters and officers from Kingston and Surbiton fire stations attended the scene.
