Firefighters are reminding restaurant and takeaway owners to make sure their extraction systems are clean after a fire in Wandsworth Road, Clapham.
Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to the fire at a restaurant with flats above.
Half of the restaurant's ducting from the ground floor to the third floor was damaged by fire. The flats above suffered smoke damage.
One person left the shop and around 10 people left the flats above. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Brigade's fire investigators believe the cause of the fire was fat and grease deposits within the ducting which were ignited by an ember from the grill below.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Restaurant and take-away owners should always take care to make sure their extraction systems are kept clean as a build up of fat and grease within the filters can lead to a fire.”
The Brigade was called at 1614 and the fire was under control at 1717. Fire crews from Clapham, Brixton, Wandsworth, Peckham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
