Firefighters rescued Snoopy the horse from marshland near Moat Lane in Erith this morning.

The 14 hands high horse was stuck in thick muddy water after escaping from a nearby field. Firefighters used mud paths to get to the animal and specialist crews used large animal rescue equipment to get the equine out.

Station Manager Barry Wakefield, who was at the scene, said:

“It appears that Snoopy had been in the deep muddy water all night and when firefighters arrived it was very close to drowning. Fire crews worked in tricky conditions, crossing a stream and using mud paths to get to the horse out.

“Snoopy was cold, wet and hungry but it doesn’t seem to have any lasting injuries. Firefighters did a fantastic job and this incident shows how varied our work is.”

The Brigade was called at 1007 and the horse was out of the water by 1158. Fire crews from Bexley and Dagenham attended with specialist animal rescue equipment.
