When is a fire engine not a fire engine?

A fire engine is the generic term used for any vehicle belonging to the fire service.

However, if you ask anyone in the profession - or an enthusiast - what the various vehicles are called you might hear the term appliances or pumps.

This is because not all fire service vehicles are used to put out fires. We have many different appliances designed to rescue people and respond to incidents such as floods, building collapses, chemical spillages and other usual events.
