Sanjay Prasad

Here is the profile of one of our firefighers, Sanjay Prasad, a Watch Manager.

Sanjay PrasadI joined the London Fire Brigade in 1990 as a firefighter and was promoted after three years to a Crew Commander. Since then, I have been promoted to Sub Officer before moving to my most recent position of Watch Commander in the Officer Development Group.

This role is based at our training centre in Southwark and involves developing individuals into Crew Commanders. It is a very demanding job but very rewarding because I play an active role in helping my colleagues to progress their careers.

One of the greatest advantages of working for the fire service is that progression really is down to the individual. But teamwork is crucial too and you cannot function in your role without it, whatever rank you are.

I've always been involved with some kind of community activity so the fire service seemed a natural career option. It doesn't always feel like 'work'... more like helping others and impacting on their lives at a particular time.

I am really happy with my job, and my goals for the short term are to enhance my training skills. I have recently become an Assistant Divisional Officer.
