London Fire Brigade hosts Oscar style awards ceremony

30 October 2007

London Fire Brigade hosted an Oscar style awards ceremony today to celebrate the innovative and groundbreaking work of its staff and partners.

The 2007 Special Achievement Awards were hosted at Glaziers Hall by TV news broadcaster Alastair Stewart and presented by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson and John Shannon from event sponsors AssetCo.

All the winners, which included both uniformed and non-uniformed staff, have gone the extra mile in their commitment to public safety, whether they have developed new ideas to improve the Brigade’s operational effectiveness, promoted vital community safety messages or displayed an act of incredible bravery.

The annual awards also recognised the vital contribution made by the Brigade’s external partners who help it carry out its day to day work across London.

Winners in this category included London Ambulance Service which has worked closely with the Brigade to develop an enhanced first aid course for firefighters.

Clinical Practice Manager Mark Whitbread from London Ambulance Service said: “This award is a tribute to all the hard work put in by staff who have been involved with the project at both the Fulham Paramedic Education Centre and the London Fire Brigade. This is just one of the ways the London Ambulance Service is working to get life-saving treatment to patients even faster, and with the London Fire Brigade having this medical training and equipment it can only benefit the people of London.”

This year’s other winners included Battersea Fire Station for their work in the field of urban search and rescue, the Brigade’s Energy Team which has helped to develop solar projects at several fire stations across the capital, and two firefighters from Wimbledon who produced a rap video to help get across fire safety messages to young Londoners.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “The hard work and initiatives that these awards celebrate demonstrate the drive and exceptional commitment found throughout the London Fire Brigade. They also provide us with an opportunity to recognise the contribution made by our external partners such as the London Ambulance Service. All this year’s winners have played a pivotal role in helping the London Fire Brigade fulfil its principal aim of making London a safer city."

John Shannon from sponsors AssetCo said: "I am delighted we are back here for the second year running supporting what promises to become a very special annual award ceremony for the Fire Service and the people of London".

"We are very proud of the successful partnership we have developed over the years working with the London Fire Brigade and, on behalf of the entire team at AssetCo, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate all the award winners and their colleagues behind the scenes for their continuous dedication to making London a safer city for us all".
