An innovative campaign which aims to encourage the over 65s both to protect themselves from the flu, and their homes from fire, has been launched in Lewisham.
Lewisham Primary Care Trust and London Fire Brigade have teamed up to run the ‘Fire & Flu’ campaign and are holding three joint events across the borough during October and November.
The events are open to the over 65s registered with a GP in Lewisham, who can come and get a flu jab, have a cup of tea and arrange a free home fire safety visit with local firefighters. They will also get a free smoke alarm fitted where necessary.
The events will be held between 10am and 3pm on:
• Wednesday 31 October at the Sainsbury’s Supermarket, New Cross Road, New cross. SE14 5UL
• Wednesday 7 November at the Downham Health & Leisure Centre, Moorfield Road. BR1 4QN
• Wednesday 14 November at Deptford Action Group for the Elderly, Deptford High Street, SE8 4AA
Michael Richardson, Chairman of Lewisham Primary Care Trust said: “This year, we are trying an entirely new approach to help encourage our elderly residents, who are more at risk from the harmful effects of flu, to get themselves protected. By working in partnership with our local fire service, we hope that together we can encourage more of our elderly residents to protect both their own health and at the same time their homes from the risk of fire.”
Dave Smith, London Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Lewisham said: “We are very pleased to be working with our partners in the health service to protect the people of the borough. A working smoke alarm and advice from firefighters delivered in your own home is the very best way of making yourself safe from the dangers of fire. Any resident of any borough, regardless of age, can also book a free home fire safety visit by phoning 08000 28 44 28”
