Local children learnt the importance of fire safety and had a fun packed day at Tottenham Fire Station on Thursday (23 August). The children, aged between six and 16 were given fire safety advice including the importance of having a smoke alarm and what to do in case of an emergency.
The day provided the children with the opportunity to show off their creative skills by designing fire safety posters and badges. They also used a mock telephone exchange system to show them when they should dial 999 and the dangers of making hoax calls.
The children were split into four watches, blue, red, green and white exactly like real firefighters and taught the workings of a fire station including equipment used at incidents and the fire engines.
Borough Commander of Haringey John Brown said: “I’m delighted that the Brigade is reaching out to young people and showing the importance of fire safety. These schemes are essential in educating children at an early age and it enables firefighters to engage with the community.”
The grand finale was a relay race involving young people dressed in mini uniforms running to fire hoses and squirting water out of them.
The event run by the London Fire Brigade’s schools team enables the Brigade to engage with local children and inform them of the dangers of fire at an early age. The schools team was set up in 2001 and is responsible for visiting and educating schools within London.
The event organiser Kaival Singh from the London Fire Brigade Schools team said: "The Schools Team is very proud to work closely with the children who are so eager to learn about fire safety in a fun yet educational way. The event has been a great success."
The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24.
