Fire Brigade marathon runners call for a safer London

12 April 2007

Over 60 London firefighters and other Brigade staff will hit the Capital’s streets for this year’s Flora London Marathon (Sunday 22nd April), aiming to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Hundreds more Brigade staff will be working along the route, helping runners and talking to the thousands of spectators about fire safety in their homes.

Firefighters from stations all over the capital (list of runners available from the Brigade press office), alongside office based staff, will be running to raise money for a wide range of charities but will also be using specially customised vests to remind Londoners to make sure their home has a working smoke alarm.

Peter Cowup (Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Islington) who has been coordinating the Brigade’s efforts in the Marathon for a number of years said: “The London Marathon is one of the biggest sports events in the world and brings thousands of people onto the streets with millions more watching on TV. It’s a perfect opportunity to make London a safer city by talking to people about the dangers of fire. Throughout the day our staff will be giving out advice, and banners and information are on display along the route.

“Our runners will also be hoping to raise thousands of pounds for good causes – many of which have special significance for them.”

To support this year's event, the Brigade is supplying around 300 members of staff/volunteers to act as marshals on the one and half mile stretch of the route along The Highway, East London. Brigade personnel will also help to staff the drink station located at the Poplar High St section of the route.

Photo call: A group of the Brigade’s runners will be attending a pre marathon photo call at the London Eye on Monday 16th April (10.45am, Monday 16th April at the Coffee Kiosk beside the London Eye). Press photographers are welcome to attend.
