London Fire Brigade has launched a DVD ‘Be alert. Be alarmed. Be alive’, warning the City’s residents about the dangers of fire and the need to have working smoke alarms in their homes.
The DVD is part of the Brigade’s ‘Be safe and sound’ campaign which promotes fire safety and encourages Londoners to take advantage of free home fire safety checks.
The three minute DVD will be played at shopping centres, events and community venues, and covers scenarios where fires can cause damage to property or even death in the home.
London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Community Safety Steve Turek said: “Though accidental fires in the home are decreasing, there were still over 6000 in London last year. On average, around 50 Londoners die every year following fires in the home.”
“Getting a smoke alarm, regularly testing and maintaining it, as well as planning your escape route in the event of a fire can dramatically decrease the risk of death or serious injury.”
The Brigade is offering all London residents a free home fire safety check. Firefighters visit homes, look for fire risks and can fit free smoke alarms if they are needed. Call 08000 28 44 28 to arrange a home fire safety check.
