Fire Brigade urge Londoners to take care in the snow

07 February 2007

With snow forecast this Thursday, the London Fire Brigade is urging Londoners to take extra care at home, at work and whilst out driving.

As the temperature drops and the snow falls, many Londoners are tempted to use poorly maintained heating appliances or dust off an old electric blanket. Fire crews across the capital also prepare to be called out to a higher number of road traffic collisions caused by icy conditions.

Steve Turek, London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Community Safety said: “Calls to London Fire Brigade are always up during extreme weather conditions, and snow fall can lead to easily avoidable accidents and emergencies. Throughout the winter months we see fires – and fire deaths – that could be avoided. It’s vitally important that Londoners remember a few simple checks that can ensure they stay safe during the winter.”

Winter fire safety advice:
•Fit a smoke alarm – they could save your life
•Ensure all objects are kept clear of heaters
•Ensure all electrical appliances are in safe working order, replacing frayed cords and broken plugs and keeping them free from dust
•If you have central heating, ensure the boiler is regularly serviced.
•Make sure candles are used with caution and never left unattended
•Always turn off electric blankets before getting into bed
•Make sure electric blankets are serviced regularly
•Take extra care while driving, allowing extra time for your journey

Londoners can contact the Fire Brigade and take advantage of a free home fire safety check. The Brigade will install free smoke alarms if you need them and check your home for risks. If you or someone you know would benefit from a home fire safety check call 08000 28 44 28
