One of London’s historic fire stations is to get a £3.5 million facelift.
Knightsbridge fire station opened in 1907 and was originally designed for horse-drawn fire engines. The work will see a complete revamp of accommodation and facilities in the Basil Street building to provide a better and more flexible working environment. The current facilities will be modernised and a new breathing apparatus and equipment cleaning room will be provided on the ground floor. Improvement, repair and cleaning work will also be carried out to the building’s exterior.
In line with London Fire Brigade’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the services it provides, the new station will be fitted with an energy efficient boiler and lighting system and other heat saving measures.
Borough Commander for Kensington and Chelsea, Tim Chidgey said: “This major refurbishment project will ensure that Knightsbridge Fire Station continues to serve the local community for many more years while providing our firefighters with accommodation and facilities which meet the demands of a modern fire and rescue service.”
