Plans for a new fire station in Walthamstow moved a step closer after funding for a major rebuilding project was agreed.
The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority has agreed a £5.7 million rebuilding programme which would see Walthamstow’s existing fire station demolished and a new three bay station built on the same site.
The current station on Forest Road was built in 1923 and has four fire engine bays which were originally designed for smaller appliances. Plans to introduce a second fire engine to Walthamstow to further improve fire cover in the area, as well as the development of better equipped and larger vehicles over the years, means extra space is now required. The Authority also wishes to incorporate a community facility in the new station.
Waltham Forest Borough Commander Darren Dovey said: “This is good news for both residents and firefighters in Waltham Forest. The new fire station will help further improve the service we offer to the local community, while providing our firefighters and support staff with modern, up-to-date accommodation and facilities that are fit for the 21st century.
“The demands of a modern fire and rescue service mean London Fire Brigade now has a diverse fleet of vehicles of various types and sizes and the extra space that the new station will provide will give us the ability to engage the community and the flexibility to meet possible future needs.”
