Waste fire hose used by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) is being turned into waist belts and is being sold at this weekend’s Live Earth event at Wembley Stadium.
The Brigade has been looking at innovative and unique ways of using the waste hose and this is just one way in which the five tonnes of waste hose is now being used, rather than being sent to landfill.
The belts are being made by Bournemouth based company Bio Supplies, which will be selling the belts (carrying the Live Earth logo, rather than the LFB logo) at the event and giving half the proceeds to LFB charities. Fire hose belts, carrying the LFB logo, will also soon be available on the London Fire Brigade online shop at: http://www.lfbshop.co.uk/
Val Shawcross, Chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, which manages LFB, said: “It is great news that we are finding useful and unique ways of reusing waste fire hose, which for years has just been sent to landfill. The Brigade is committed to tackling climate change and we are delighted to be supporting the global aims of Live Earth in this way.”
The fire hose belts are part of a much wider strategy by the Brigade to be greener. The Brigade’s vehicles are being upgraded to meet EU emissions targets, and fire stations across London are being fitted out with green energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels.
