Nicol Thornton has been appointed as the new Head of Procurement at the London Fire Brigade.
Nicol’s role will be to oversee the Brigade’s central procurement of goods, clothing and technical equipment and will also manage and coordinate research and maintenance of the Brigade’s operational equipment. Nicol will be responsible for the Brigade’s Public Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts, which include the supply and maintenance of its 195 front-line fire appliances and also act as a focal point for all future Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects.
Nicol was previously the Assistant Director (Resource Management) & Head of Procurement at Suffolk County Council and had recently been seconded to the East of England Regional Centre of Excellence and worked on a national procurement programme. He has held senior procurement roles in a range of central and local government organisations as well as within the private sector.
Nicol said on his appointment: “The London Fire Brigade is one of world’s largest fire and rescue services and I am really looking forward to taking up this role and playing an important part in making London a safer city. I look forward to using my experience and enthusiasm to build on the excellent work of my predecessors.”
The Brigade’s Director of Resources Barbara Riddell said: “I am delighted to welcome Nicol to the Authority. His wide ranging expertise will bring significant benefits to the Brigade and I look forward to working with him.”
Nicol replaces Terry Brewer, who has left the Brigade to be the Chief Executive of Firebuy, the national procurement agency for the fire service.
