London Fire Brigade

Brigade writes to all care homes in London

13 October 2015

We have written to all cares home operators in the capital to remind them of their fire safety responsibilities.

Over the past few years there have been a number of incidents in London and other parts of the UK that have resulted in death, injury and near misses.

Following the tragic death of a vulnerable resident in a fire within a care home environment earlier this year, the Coroner has again raised concerns about appropriate levels of fire safety within care homes, which have been sent to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for consideration.

This follows on from a prosecution of a care home in Southwark after the death of a resident in which the company was fined £120,000 for fire safety offences.

The Brigade believes some of these incidents were foreseeable and preventable.

The letter calls for urgent consideration and action by care home operators to ensure that risks to clients and the potential impact on the business itself are further reduced.
