Two people a day trapped in toilets or bathrooms, Brigade figures show

19 November 2015

New figures released by us show firefighters attend more than two incidents a day of people trapped inside a toilet or a bathroom.

From 2011 to the present day, fire crews were called to 3,855 call outs to people stuck in a washroom. The Brigade is reminding people to use 999 for genuine emergencies.

Total incidents attended between 2011 and 2015 (to date) involving people locked in a toilet or bathroom

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "It's embarrassing getting locked inside a toilet but the vast majority of the call outs are not emergencies and we'd like to wash our hands of these incidents, freeing up more time for our crews to assist people in real need of assistance.

"We're asking people to think before they dial 999 and to spare a thought for those who do not have access to sanitation and toilets."

World Toilet Day was created by the World Toilet Organisation to raise awareness for 2.5 billion people who do not have access to sanitation and toilets.
