Annual Macmillan opening day at Islington Fire Station

09 September 2015

For the tenth year running Islington Fire Station opened its doors on Saturday, 5 September to raise money for Macmillan.

It was really well supported by the local community and early indications show that blue watch managed to raise £1,300 for the charity that does so much for those affected by cancer. There is a potential that this will be matched funded up to a total of £1,200 so the final figure may rise to £2,500 which would be a fantastic achievement for all involved.

Over the past decade Islington firefighters have raised over £16,000 for Macmillan.

Special guests

Waterloo Road’s Lenny Brown aka Joe Slater will be our special guest. Joe appeared on the 2014 series of The X Factor, making it through to the boot camp stage will be singing his songs to entertain the crowd.

Islington Watch Manager Emma Beattie said:

"It's was a really fun event for all ages and really connects the fire station with the local community. This was our 10th year raising money for Macmillian which is such a fantastic charity. This open day gave everyone the opportunity to learn about what we do and raise money for cancer."

Imogen Erskine a member of the public said:

“We had a fab family afternoon at Islington Fire Station.  The staff on hand were patient with the children and answered all their questions, no matter how random!  It was great to meet the fire dogs too and to learn more about what they do as part of the team.”

Bake Off

Following on from Firefighter Mat Riley's baking exploits on The Great British Bake Off, the crews baked a wonderful array of home baked cakes, along with hot and cold drinks on sale.

Children young and old had the opportunity to look over our fire engines, try on our fire kit, make badges and learn about fire safety advice.
