Historical Lambeth Fire Station opens its doors

24 June 2016

On 21 July 1937 thousands of people gathered to see King George VI open the Lambeth Fire Station at 8 Albert Embankment.

This Saturday you can be among the crowds at Lambeth Fire Station's open day 11- 4pm.

The building was specially designed Headquarters for the Brigade: as well as a fire station, the ten storey building housed our administration, communications, vehicle maintenance and research workshops.

The station is now home to the Lambeth H22 watches, including Red Watch, who’ll be hosting you on Saturday.

Remembering the fallen

Firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty are celebrated in an incredible way at Lambeth station.

The Roll of Honour complete with stone carvings and painted entries sits in the foyer of the old headquarters.

The wall includes an entry for James Braidshaw, our first Fire Chief. It will be open for all to see on Saturday.

Visits from far away

Lambeth Station receive a lot of visitors from overseas and around the country.

As the old headquarters the building has a real draw for firefighters and first responders from visiting London.

The corridors of the fire station are packed full of badges from Germany, America and Thailand, to name a few all given to the watches from their colleagues from around the world.

Majestic building

The building design by E. P. Wheeler is impressive from the street, towering over the Thames.

However, on the other side of the building, the view from the yard shows the true scale of the building.

If you come along on Saturday you'll also see the drill tower, now a listed structure, where firefighters will be doing demonstrations of firefighting techniques.

Come along and enjoy a BBQ, dressing up as a Firefighter, learning the history of the Brigade with our Museum Team or just making the most of this opportunity to see behind the doors of a piece of London's history.
