Crews carry out exercise in Blackwall Tunnel

06 April 2017

Firefighters from Poplar and East Greenwich fire stations have taken part in a multi-agency exercise in the Blackwall Tunnel organised by Transport for London.

Exercise Boron took place overnight at the end of March during a routine maintenance closure which allowed our crews to access all areas of the tunnel, including the roadway, sub tunnels and ventilation shafts.

Station Manager Lee Walker who attended the exercise said: "Any operational incident which takes place in a tunnel presents particular challenges to firefighters and this was a chance for our crews to familiarise themselves with its layout and operating systems.

"It gave us a valuable opportunity to consider our tactics in response to a number of different emergency scenarios including fires, road traffic collisions, flooding events and incidents involving hazardous materials, all of which could require rescues and evacuations."

Two fire engines from East Greenwich and one fire engine from Poplar – the nearest stations to either end of the tunnel – took part in the exercise along with around 15 firefighters and officers.
