London Fire Brigade to use fast food to fight fires this Christmas

10 December 2014

Does Islington have the best Indian? Dalston do the best doners? And Bromley the best burgers?

#TakeawayMap

We’re on the hunt for the capital’s best takeaways to feature on a new online fast food map they want Londoners to use after a Christmas night out.

Cooking while drunk is a major cause of house fires and the map will help Londoners find their nearest takeaway recommended by Londoners rather than attempting to cook after too many Christmas tipples.

The public are invited to nominate their favourite takeaways by posting on the Brigade’s Twitter and Facebook page using the hashtag #TakeawayMap starting on Wednesday. The selected eateries will be shown on the map as the best places to get a takeaway rather than risking a house fire by cooking when drunk.

We will be announcing results from the public survey in the big Christmas party week of 15-19 December.

Our figures show that:

• Two fires a day happen after Londoners have been drinking.
• One in four people who die in a fire has alcohol in their system.
• Three quarters of alcohol related fires are caused by cooking under the influence.
• Over half of these fires happen because someone has fallen asleep.

Cooking fires

Last year was the lowest for cooking fires in December since the Brigade started it’s annual Christmas takeaway campaign.

There were 15 accidental fires a day last December. Five people lost their lives and over 50 were injured, 40 per cent of those fires were caused by cooking and nine people suffered injuries.

The young, well-educated professionals targeted by the campaign cause more than a quarter of all accidental house fires in the capital, often by attempting to cook when drunk.

London Fire Brigade Commissioner, Ron Dobson said:

“Drunk cooking could lead you to remember this year’s Christmas party for all the wrong reasons.

“If people cook during the festive period under the influence of alcohol they could be putting themselves and the people they love in danger. Let us know where the best takeaway in London is and you could be helping to persuade someone from cooking drunk.”
