Quick thinking Wembley fire crew help save two lives in half an hour

13 July 2012

Quick thinking firefighters returning from a routine fire safety inspection helped to save two lives in the space of 30 minutes on Wembley High Road last week.

In two separate incidents on Wednesday 5 July, Crew Manager Dan Green and firefighters Darren Bennett, Roy Maynard and Victor Muhammad from Wembley white watch came to the rescue of a girl who collapsed on Wembley High Street and shortly afterwards helped paramedics  perform CPR on a man who had suffered a heart attack a few feet away.

Crew Manager Dan Green and firefighters Darren Bennett, Roy Maynard and Victor Muhammad had just completed a fire safety inspection on 5 July 2012 when they came across a large crowd gathering in Wembley High Road.

A young girl, believed to be around 13 had collapsed in the street. The girl was unconscious and the four firefighters immediately stopped their fire engine and rushed to the scene, providing the girl with fluids and first aid until the London Ambulance Service arrived.

Once they handed her over to ambulance crews they began to make their way back to the fire station. A few minutes further down the road,  they spotted another ambulance crew working on a man suffering from a suspected heart attack . The firefighters instantly rushed to help  and assisted  paramedics until the man’s heartbeat came back.

Crew Manager Dan Green said:

“We had just attended a fire safety inspection and to attend these two incidents on the way back to the station is unusual but we’re trained for every kind of incident.

“When we arrived on Wembley High Road we saw a massive crowd that had gathered around and we immediately stopped to see if we could help.

“We provided first aid to a girl, who was completely dehydrated and had collapsed in the street. She came around and we handed her over to the London Ambulance Service, only to find ourselves in a second situation a few minutes later. The whole crew worked really well together to help both people and I cannot commend the efforts of my colleagues highly enough.“

All three firefighters including Crew Manager Dan Green will be awarded by the Brigade for their bravery and quick thinking actions.

Terry Harrington, London Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Brent said:

“Our fire crews did an excellent job and I’m really proud of them. They didn’t hesitate to help the girl, acting with speed while there was a big crowd watching.

Shortly after they’d managed to bring her round and left paramedics to look after her, the firefighters came across a second emergency and again did what they were trained to do. Crews immediately stepped in to help a man who had collapsed.

I’ve no doubt that the actions of our firefighters, working with paramedics, helped save the lives of both the girl and the man. This is what the fire service is all about, helping people in need. The crew will be formally congratulated for their deployment of life saving skills and professional conduct.”
