London Fire Brigade

A brief history of helmets

The changing style of the Brigade helmet over the last 150 years

Since 1866, we have used 16 different styles of helmets, ranging from our first leather helmet design through to the iconic brass Metropolitan Fire Brigade model and the yellow cork helmet.

Our current firefighter helmet, the MSA Gallet F1, is popular worldwide with fire services.

The helmet offers state-of-the-art protection for firefighters. It has a high-temperature polyamide shell with reinforced impact-absorbing padding.

The dual visor includes a gold mesh face shield for additional protection and an inner screen for eye-protection during rescues and other operations.
