The seminar comes at a time when the government is looking for ways to share best practice and update the action plan arising from its Strategy for Children and Young People (CYP) 2006-2010.

This seminar will focus in particular on work undertaken by the fire and rescue service in the area of tackling juvenile anti-social behaviour and report the results of a national survey of youth work in the fire and rescue service.

Delegates will hear from a range of speakers and discuss key issues of youth engagement and debate the obstacles we face. Following the seminar a report with recommendations on youth engagement by the fire and rescue service will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

Agenda

The keynote address will be given by the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

Agenda topics include:

• Government direction on youth engagement
• Youth engagement work in fire and rescue services
• An effective approach to youth work today
• The challenges ahead for youth engagement work

There will be representatives from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and some of the major national youth organisations speaking at the event.

Sir Ken Knight, the Government’s Chief Fire Advisor will also be speaking.

The afternoon session will include three workshops designed as discussion forums with expert panellists from a range of fields leading the discussion.
