Fire deaths in London report 1996-2000

The London Fire Brigade issued a report in 2001 which, for the first time, investigated all fire deaths in London, when they occured, who was affected and the reasons for them.

This is an historical report. We also have more up to date information on fire deaths.

This report analysed the 418 fire deaths that occured during 1996-2000.  Over 85% of these recorded deaths took place in the home, and of those, 77% did not have a smoke alarm fitted.

Age was also a highly significant danger factor, with nearly 60 per cent of accidental fire deaths claiming the life of somebody over 60, whilst death rates were considerably higher for those over 80 than for any other group.

In summary the study, which researched the Brigade's database of 27,000 fires, showed that you were more likely to die in a fire at your home if you:

  • are over 60
  • are a smoker
  • enjoy a few evening drinks
  • live in Tower Hamlets, Brent or Westminster
  • do not own a smoke alarm
  • suffer from some kind of disability
