Automatic fire alarms

Automatic fire alarms (AFAs) are mainly used in buildings to provide an early warning of a possible fire. They give the signal to evacuate the building immediately.

As soon as an AFA sounds, your local management procedures, based on your Fire Risk Assessment, should be put in place to locate and find out the reason for the fire alarm sounding.

Unwanted fire signals

Unwanted fire alarm signals are fire alarm signals that are not a result of a fire or test.

A lot of work has been carried out recently to highlight the problem of unwanted fire signals from AFAs. Due to the high number of unwanted signals being transmitted to fire brigades in this way, the most recent advice has been for occupiers to check first and then call the Brigade if there is a confirmed fire or a real suspicion that one exists.

If there is no fire and no obvious reason for the fire alarm operating signal, call your fire alarm engineer as soon as possible to have your fire alarm checked.

You may have already received information on this subject or have been visited by one of our fire safety officers to discuss any specific issues in more detail.

Remember - reducing the number of unwanted fire signals benefits us all by:

  • preventing unnecessary disruption to your staff and business
  • reducing your costs
