Fire safety at work

Fire safety at work is always vitally important. As an employer, you should make sure you and your staff know what to do to prevent a fire in the workplace and how they will escape if a fire does break out.

If there is a fire - get out, stay out and call 999 - don't try to tackle fire yourself.

The Brigade has guidance notes on various fire safety at work topics. If you have a specific enquiry in mind, please contact your local borough team for advice.

It's also good practice and makes good business sense to improve fire safety in the workplace. Our fire safety training courses will help you and your staff reduce the risk of fire at work and help you stay safe if a fire does break out.

Fire Regulations - your business and the law

The government has recently changed fire safety legislation by introducing the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 on 1 October 2006. The changes were designed to make the law easier to comply with and understand, by reforming and rationalising current fire safety laws contained in over 100 pieces of legislation.

Concerned about a fire risk?

If you're concerned about a fire risk which may be a danger to life you should telephone or visit your local fire and community safety centre during normal office hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Outside these hours, call 999.

These risks may have serious implications and are dealt with quickly and in confidence by us. A 'risk to life' could include a disregard to fire safety practices, for example, blocked or locked fire exits.
