Asbestos reporting

From 21 May 2004 it is a legal requirement for premises, other than domestic buildings such as a house, to report the presence of asbestos. Here's what you need to do.

This is a requirement of regulation 4 of the Control of asbestos at work regulations (2002).

Copies of the regulations and approved codes of practice are available from Her Majesty's Stationery Office and a free guidance leaflet is available from the Health and Safety Executive website.

The duty holder of any non-domestic premises (duty holder being person responsible for maintenance/repair/access to the premises) is responsible for passing information about the presence of asbestos to the Emergency Services.

The duty holder can report this information to us via a webform.

About the webform:

The webform requires you to answer some specific questions. Please consult the following guidance, which will help you complete the form correctly.

Building details

  • Contact name: The duty holder of the premises
  • Company name: The name by which the company is known and which is displayed on the outside of the premises for identification
  • Address: Postal address
  • Adjacent roads: Indicate if access to your premises is available from other roads, and/or if your building perimeter incorporates other roads not mentioned in your address.

Asbestos details

  • Confirmed/suspected: Is your asbestos risk confirmed or suspected?
  • Type: You will be asked to place your risk into one of three categories;
    1. Asbestos
    2. Fibrous asbestos
    3. Rigid asbestos cement panels
  • Location: Specify the floor within your building that the asbestos is found, e.g. basement, ground floor etc.
  • Specific room: Please tell us where on the floor the risk is recorded e.g. boiler room, main office etc.
  • Description of asbestos: Please tell us the material that contains the asbestos, for example, pipe lagging, roof panels etc.
  • Condition: Specify the condition of the asbestos, e.g. is it intact or breaking up? Has it been painted or is it untouched?
