Reducing arson - campaigns and initiatives

This page contains details of our campaigns and initiatives around reducing arson.

Don't fuel the flames

Don't fuel the flames posterA series of five leaflets and a poster have been designed to give arson reduction advice to those in a position of authority in London. The leaflets are broken down into three sections; how to increase security, procedures you could put in place and equipment you could use. You can print off a copy of each leaflet and the poster below or to request copies, please contact arsonreductionteam@london-fire.gov.uk

To prevent arson we must think like an arsonist and remove what they are looking for:

There is also information about security and safety measures and equipment to use to reduce the risk of arson in the following areas and circumstances:

Buildings leaflet [pdf icon - click to find out how to get Acrobat Reader PDF 73kb] How to reduce fire in buildings. Some buildings in London are more vulnerable to antisocial behaviour and arson. Make a few changes and prevent your home, business or school becoming an arson statistic.
Open area leaflet [pdf icon - click to find out how to get Acrobat Reader PDF 126kb] How to reduce fires in open areas. The summer is often the worst time of year for open land fires, by putting measures in place before, during and after the season you can protect our open areas from being blighted.
Outdoor storage leaflet [pdf icon - click to find out how to get Acrobat Reader PDF 119kb] Outdoor structure and storage. Everything is susceptible to the opportunist arsonist, make sure you secure important areas of storage.
Rubbish leaflet [pdf icon - click to find out how to get Acrobat Reader PDF 93kb] How to reduce rubbish fires. By disposing of your rubbish properly, the chance of a fire is greatly reduced.  Apply some simple measures and remove the vulnerability.
Vehicles leaflet [pdf icon - click to find out how to get Acrobat Reader PDF 99kb] How to reduce vehicle fires. Burnt out vehicles are not only an eyesore but cause massive environmental damage, protect your car and remove the opportunity for someone to damage it.

London Fire Brigade's Arson Board trial

Arson boardIn response to the low detection and prosecution of arson in London, a LFB Arson Board (similar to a police witness appeal board) trial was conducted between 9 May 2005 and 9 August 2005 in Tower Hamlets, Newham and Southwark because of their large numbers of non-accidental fires. The success of the first trial has led to a second trial which started on 16 January 2006, in 17 London boroughs over a six month period.

Boards are placed at scenes which have suffered either a large arson incident or a series of small fires. They are designed to encourage the local community to call Crimestoppers and report arson as a crime.
