Water officeThe water office is responsible for securing adequate supplies of water for firefighting. This is normally done by the installation of fire hydrants allowing a constant supply of water to be drawn from the water main. Although these are owned and maintained by water companies that serve London, fire crews carry out inspections of all of London's 108,000 fire hydrants every two years. The water office coordinates this and makes sure action is taken to remedy any faults that may be found. We also maintain information on other types of emergency water supplies that fire crews can use such as lakes, rivers and swimming pools. Reporting faults on fire hydrantsIf you discover a fire hydrant in an unsafe condition (for example, discharging water onto the footpath or road) it should be reported to the water company serving that part of London. Or you can contact the water office and we will act on any information that is reported to us.
