Advice for the carers of older people

The majority of fire deaths in the home involve older people.

Many older people live alone and have reduced mobility, which makes it harder to escape from a fire. Help reduce the risk by:

  • Requesting a home fire safety visit
  • Making an escape plan
  • Check our home fire safety risk matrix to see how you can reduce the risk of death or injury from fire
  • If the person you care for lives in sheltered accommodation or a residential home, ask their landlord or warden to explain the safety plans for the premises so they're sure of the nearest route to safety
  • Visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau, Shelter or Age UK to find out about local voluntary groups that can help
