The way we were

The London Fire Brigade's history can be divided this area into five time periods. Click on the period you are interested in - you will be able to go forward to the next time period or backwards from each stage.

• In the beginning - from the Romans to 1666.
• The Great Fire of London - and what happened afterwards.
• The first 'brigade' - from 1833 to the turn of the century.
• A 20th century Fire Service - the LFB is born, the Blitz and the post war years.
• 1960s to the new millennium - GLC days to a thoroughly modern service.
