Frequently asked questionsWe've grouped together some frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help you get the most out of using this website.
Is this site just for people who live or work in London? While this site is primarily aimed at people who are based, or spend some time in London, users outside of London can find general fire safety information for at work, in your home and holidays. You can also find useful links to your local UK fire and rescue service. I've just started a business - how do I find out what I need to do to comply with fire regulations? The section on work fire regulations provides useful guidelines to get you started. What are the London Fire Brigade's main responsibilities? We provide five main services: community fire safety, legislative fire safety, fire and rescue emergency response, special services and emergency planning. Where do I start if I want to become a firefighter? Our Summer 2003 recruitment campaign for trainee firefighters has now closed, and we do not yet have plans for our next recruitment drive. However, you can still find general information on what it takes to be a firefighter. Where do I find the latest fire incidents that have occurred in London? We keep a log of the latest incidents attended by the London Fire Brigade. How do I get the fire safety Schools Team to come to my school? At the end of each school year we write to all the primary schools in London, informing them of our education programme. Our school officers then arrange visits to children in years two and six . How do I prevent fires from happening in my home? Most domestic fires start accidentally. Taking some simple precautions such as fitting a smoke alarm, planning an escape route and making safety checks last thing at night, can save lives. What do I do if a fire starts? Above all remain calm, try to inform everyone in the vicinity about the fire, get out of the building and call the fire brigade. What is the London fire brigade doing to help my community? Along with responding to fires, we aim to educate people about the dangers of fire using a variety of approaches, including talking to local communities about the particular fire issues affecting their area. Can I find information about what is going on in our area of London? We are currently developing the in your area section of the site. However you can find contact information for the stations in your borough as well as press releases. Who runs the London fire brigade? The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) runs the London Fire Brigade. We are a part of a group of organisations under the 'umbrella' of the Greater London Authority (GLA). What do I do if I want to attend an LFEPA meeting? All LFEPA meetings are open to the public, unless the meeting has confidential or exempt information to discuss. Do I need a license to commercially store petroleum? Yes. By licensing petroleum, we ensure those keeping and dispensing petrol do so in a safe manner. If you are storing petroleum for commercial or retail purposes and do not have a licence, contact petroleum enquiries on 020 7587 6378. I used to work for the London fire brigade, how do I request ex-employee information? If you are a relative or an ex-employee you can find out more about your service history information. How is the London Fire brigade implementing electronic government targets? Find out more about how we are Implement Electronic Government (IEG).
