London Fire Brigade

Safety at work

If you are an employer, you should make sure you and your staff know what to do to prevent a fire in the workplace and how to escape if a fire does break out.

If there is a fire - get out, stay out and call 999 - don't try to tackle fire yourself.

There are three ways to make your workplace a safer place to be.

Know the law: in October 2006 the government introduced the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The changes were designed to make the law easier to comply with and understand. You also need to know about how we enforce legislation. The Brigade has guidance notes on various fire safety at work topics. If you have a specific enquiry in mind, please contact your local Fire Safety Regulation Team for advice.

Get training: it makes business sense to improve fire safety in your workplace. Our training courses will help you and your staff reduce fire risks and stay safe.

Tell the Brigade about serious risks: if you're concerned about a fire risk which may be a danger to life (for instance a company or organisation disregarding fire safety practices) you should telephone or visit your local fire safety regulation team during normal office hours,  Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Outside these hours, call 999.

These risks may have serious implications and are dealt with quickly and in confidence by us. A 'risk to life' could include a disregard to fire safety practices, for example, blocked or locked fire exits.
