Fire safety at home

Most fires in the home start accidentally and the effects can be devastating

It’s important that you know how to reduce the chances of a fire starting in your home and keep yourself, your family and your property safe from fire.

In our home fire safety pages you'll find lots of information to help you do just that. From kitchen safety to booking a home visit and safely using candles in your home.

Don’t forget, if there is a fire inside your home – get out, stay out and call 999 – don’t try to tackle the fire yourself.

Our two-page A5 Home Fire Safety Guide provides helpful advice, at a glance, on issues including smoke detection, living in purpose-built blocks of flats and smoking.

Know the Plan

If you live in a purpose-built flat or maisonette and there is a fire elsewhere in your building but not inside your flat, it may be safer to stay put. Make sure you know your fire plan.
