London Fire Brigade wins green awards

17 November 2008

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has scooped two awards at the Mayor of London’s Green Procurement code awards.

The 2008 awards took place on 10 November at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in central London. The awards were open to London based organisations signed up to the Green Procurement Code and recognise outstanding achievement in responsible purchasing.

London Fire Brigade won two awards for:

• Policy, strategy and communication

• Procurement process

The Brigade was also awarded the gold standard for green procurement, making it only one of three organisations in London to be awarded the highest level.

Chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, Councillor Brian Coleman said: “Once again the Authority is ahead of the game, this year recognised as one of only three organisations to be awarded the gold standard for green procurement”.

Other Brigade green achievements have included:
• Winning a number of awards, including the City of London Corporation’s Sustainable City Award in 2006
• London Fire Brigade was also one of the first organisations to receive the new Carbon Trust Standard which acknowledged the hard work that has gone into cutting the Brigade's carbon
• Our fleet of 600 vehicles meet Low Emission Zone directives on exhaust emissions.
• Introducing a sustainable energy programme which includes fitting fire stations with solar panels, wind turbines, energy efficient technologies and ‘good housekeeping’ to reduce energy usage – saving so far £230k per year
• Innovative waste and recycling schemes, from a London wide waste contract to making fashion belts out of recycled fire hoses
