London Fire Brigade says “thanks” to star staff

31 October 2008

A range of excellent work, from emergency rescues to staff who’ve gone the extra mile to prevent fires, was highlighted yesterday at London Fire Brigade’s annual ‘Special Achievement Awards’.

The ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Alistair Stewart, with awards presented by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson and John Shannon, from sponsors AssetCo.

Certificates were handed out this year for people and projects including:

  • Firefighters who set up an innovative fire safety cycle team
  • Staff who’ve shown dedication to schemes helping young people
  • Fire crews involved in successful rescues
  • People who’ve gone the extra mile to promote fire safety
  • A staff member who helped raise the profile of the Brigade's LGBT support group

The event also recognised the vital contribution made by the Brigade’s external partners who help firefighters carry out their day to day work across London. Awards were given to staff from organisations including Network Rail and Age Concern. Members of the public also scooped Royal Humane Society awards for bravery.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “There has been plenty of excellent work to celebrate over the past year but we can only highlight a few people, so the ceremony is a great opportunity to thank unsung heroes across the Brigade, as well as the people winning awards.

“I’m proud to be able to congratulate our winners in person as it’s their ideas, commitment and hard work that makes London a safer city and inspires other staff to match their achievements.”

The awards ceremony took place at Lord’s cricket ground on 30th October.
